J.S.T. McGowen dies of heart disease on 7 April and is buried in the Anglican section of Rookwood Cemetery. A cenotaph is dedicated for J.S.T. McGowen at St Paul's Church, Redfern in November.

Eileen Powell, the union organiser for Railway Refreshment Room staff joins with Jack Fergurson, the ARU secretary, before the Equal Pay Conference to argue that women who replace men should be paid the male rate.

Air raid shelters are constructed across Eveleigh. Some remain today to the north of the Locomotive Workshops within the rail corridor.

Spring making activity is at its height at Eveleigh. It manufactures or repairs an average of 33,200 laminated springs and 25,500 coiled springs per year for locomotives, carriages and wagons on the NSW system.
