    The 15 March marks the opening of Ultimo Power station, owned by the Railway and Tramway Department it makes electric power available to the workshop.

    Central Station terminus is completed and the first platforms open on 4 August. The old Redfern terminus station is demolished on August 6 and the former Eveleigh Station renamed Redfern Station.

McGowen tries to settle a strike of gas workers by warning them that he will allow 'free workers' to take their jobs: a decision that goes against the grain of his whole career, reflecting his weakening health and failing concentration, and appalling the labour movement. Holman replaces McGowen as NSW Premier on 30 June.

    Construction starts on the second stage of Central Station, including the clock tower and upper levels, and is completed in 1921.

    On 2 August the General Strike starts at Eveleigh Railway Workshops following the introduction of the Taylor Card system to increase worker productivity. The General Strike extends across Eastern Australia and ultimately involves 97,000 workers. Replacement labourers are drawn from the country and join with private school boys to operate the railways. Strike breakers, known as 'Loyalists' camp at Sydney Cricket Ground and Taronga Zoo.

    On 8 September the General Strike ends after 82 days. Strikers are sacked and become known as 'Lily Whites'.
