Private Richard Joseph Horan 1893 – 1915
Private Richard Joseph Horan followed his father - who was the Superintendent of Rolling Stock - into the Department of Railways. He was killed in action during the landing at Anzac Cove on Sunday 25 April 1915. He was 22.
Conflict and compassion
Many Eveleigh men joined up as England called for help to run Europe’s railways at the end of 1916. The First Railway Imperial Expeditionary Force gathered at the Sydney Showground prior to their departure for France, probably in 1917.
1916
A trial production run of 5,000 18lb field gun shells as part of World War 1 effort takes place, but is later discontinued.
1940
Bays 5 and 6 are cleared of machinery for production of 25lb field shells as part of World War II efforts.
1942
Air raid shelters are constructed across Eveleigh. Some remain today to the north of the Locomotive Workshops within the rail corridor.
